Preliminary results of testing…

And the preliminary results of my testing are in. It appears that Akismet, Efficient Related Posts and Twitter Tools are the trifecta.

Having just these three plugins enabled causes the blog to stall on post. Well it posts, but it displays a ‘page not found’ error rather than a ‘your post has been posted’ message.

But it doesn’t always happen.

So, I am going to have to some more testing, at a later stage. Enough testing for this New Years Eve.

Twitter Tools causing my blog to hang on post

I apologise to all those people having to deal with my/their twitter stream being spammed. Was having a problem with the blog hanging on posting a new entry. And needed to do some testing.

From all my testing I can say that the Twitter Tools plugin is causing my blog to stall when I post a new entry.

I’m not sure why and don’t have the time to work it out right now. Maybe I will try turning off everything else and see if it is still a problem. But not right now, it will have to wait.

1001 things to do on 10 January

Or 10/01/2010 for those people that use the international date format.

So, what would be a better day to do a 1001 things post?

Unfortunately my time and spare brain capacity is limited at the moment.
So its time for crowd sourcing.

So you try for some self promotions. Set your blog to automatically post to Delicious and twitter. And since you submit links to Delicious you want them posted daily to your blog.

And them Delicious goes berserk.

Deciding to post every hour, or more often, the links for the last day. Feeding itself to a greater frenzy. With links to all its posts.

Worse than the runaway Delicious. Now more like a runaway freight train.

So I had to pull the plug. No more delicious link posts. At least not for the moment. Maybe again in the future when I have time to keep an eye on it.

I apologise to all the people reading my blog, twitter or facebook for all the extra spam.

In the interest of getting more posts on my blog I set Delicious to post links that I had added daily.

And to announce to the world there was a new post I added the Shorten2Ping plugin that sends to Twitter (and delicious).

All good in theory, but, if you leave things unchecked, your blog can run away from you.

Just post something or add a link to Delicious. Delicious then posts a list of links for the last day. When is added to Delicious again.

The cat chases its own tail.

Must remember to delete those links to posts of links.

I’ll stop moaning about self replicating blogs. And you can all go back to your usual programming.

No I don’t mean looking at the self replicating lists again!

New job = No life

I have a new job

I have no life

Not much commentary posted her in recent weeks as I have a new job. Which is good because it pays the bills, but it leaves little time for much else at the moment.

Would have liked to post comments about interesting things in the new recently, like: EB Games submission of 46,000 signatures on a petition; SA political commentary law; and other things of interest. Not to mention photos I have taken, and some cartoons I’ve drawn.

So, people, me included, will just have to wait till I have more time.

Australian Internet Blackout v1.0 released

Just updated my Australian Internet Blackout WordPress plugin to version 1.0.

Version 1.0 makes use of the wp_enqueue_script() function to load the Blackout JavaScript. This should stop the double loading of jQuery, and avert possible conflicts (that is the theory anyway).

I have been a bit lax recently about posting to my blog, and updating the Conroy’s Christmas present list. But my spare time has been taken up learning to write WordPress plugins.

For my first WordPress plugin I present the Australian Internet Blackout.

This plugin automatically adds the necessary JavaScript to you blog to display the protest message to people visiting your site. With the hope of bringing the government’s censorship plans to a larger audience.

The Easy way to install:

Go to the ‘Plugins’ ‘Add new’ menu in your WordPress blog
Search for ‘Australian Internet Blackout’
Find the plugin in the list returned (it should be the first one) and click ‘Install’
Activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress

The hard(er) way to install:

If you prefer to install things on you blog yourself you can.

Download the Australian Internet Blackout plugin
Unzip the plugin.
Upload it to your blog’s plugins folder
Activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress

So much for one post a day

Had intended to do one post a day for October. Some social commentary, of a picture commenting on things I saw.

It worked for half a month, but October just happens to be at the wrong time of year. Too much madly rushing to finish assignments. And not enough (spare) time to write commentary on what you see (let alone time to see it).

Try again next month? Maybe, it’ll just have to fit in with exams.
