Watching two proprietary software companies deeply opposed to computer user freedom lob accusations back and forth about who is more opposed to freedom has been surreal, to say the least. But what’s been crystal clear is that the freedom these companies are arguing about is their own, not that of their users.

I do not disagree that there are terrible things on the Internet (as there are elsewhere in the world) but our government’s plan to ‘protect’ its citizens is just wrong from both a technically achievable perspective, and from a freedom of expression and freedom of access perspective.

Considering it wants the filter to be revisited in 3 years to possibly extend it to “deal with other harmful X and R-rated material on the Internet,†its “disappointment†is a good thing.
